Different Methods of Catching Fish
There are many different kinds of fish like the trout and a catfish. In the same way there are also different methods of catching fish.
Before we get started on how to make a fishing trap, let’s first look at the different ways you can catch minnows and other interesting fish:
Using Hooks and Bait
This is the most common fishing method most of us think about when going camping. So it works by putting a piece of bait on a hook.
You tie the hook to a line (or if you have a fishing rod, you can tie the hook there) then put the bait on the hook. On the other hand, fishing with a rod is not going to be the most ideal option if you are in a survival situation. This method requires too much luck and patience to pull off. You might end up starving before you catch any fish.
Stationary Wood/Cone Trap
For this one, you create a fish trap that you can use in only one location. There are also different types of designs for this type of trap.
It works by creating a funnel or a cone opening in the trap which you weave by hand.
Once baited and the fish smells the food, they will then swim through the larger opening of the trap and then can’t get out anymore.
Moving Fish Traps
Instead of leaving the fish trap in just one location, this time you will be moving the trap through a body of water.
A good example of this would be dragging the edge of the net from a boat. You can even do this close to shore.
When you are close to shore, you can easily find a body of fish like minnows. you can easily trap them into one end of your net then tie it.
Unless you are a master of surviving in the wild, using a spear to catch fish would be ineffective.
But this method has been used many times by cave men. Back then, they used sticks to catch their food. Sticks were also used for weaving fishing traps.
How to Make your own Survival Fish Traps
Okay, now that you know about the different ways you can fish, let’s talk about how you can make your own fishing traps.
For this trap, you can use branches or small sticks.
The trap should placed towards the current to catch the fish as they swim downstream. You can also make a small one for a pond or a river to get smaller fish.
- First you need to look for an empty bottle and take off the label.
- Cut off the top of the plastic bottle
- Poke some holes into the bottom of the plastic bottle and allow the water to enter it.
- Put some stones inside the bottle.
- Invert the top of plastic bottle and put it into the lower part of the bottle. This should make it fit together nicely.
- Cut a small list on top of the bottle so that you can get the stones inside.
- Tie a handle
- Tie the bottle to a branch and let it run in the water until the fish enter
- Check the trap every once in a while to see if you caught anything
This is basically a huge fishing net. All you have to do is tie some stones to each side of the net. It may take a while to catch any fish, but with patience and consistency you can catch something.
